The job
A single-storey rear extension in Sandal, Wakefield. Trenches dug and approved by building control at 9:30am on a Thursday — 6.5m³ of C25 trench-fill needed the same day, because the forecast showed heavy rain from Friday that would have flooded the open excavation.
The problem
The builder’s ready-mix order was cancelled by the plant that morning (batching backlog), with the next slot offered on Monday. Three days of open trenches through a wet weekend risked collapsed trench walls, a re-dig, a second inspection and a blown programme for the brickwork gang booked for the following week.
What we did
- 10:15am: builder called 01924 910 129; we confirmed a truck could be there for 1pm

- 1:05pm: truck on site. Inspector’s spec was C25 at S4 (flowing trench-fill) — dosed and mixed at the kerb
- 2:20pm: 6.9m³ placed — the trenches took slightly more than the drawing suggested, and the extra 0.4m³ was mixed on the spot rather than triggering a second delivery
The outcome
- Footings poured, tamped and protected before the rain arrived
- Brickwork started on schedule the following Wednesday
- The builder has since put 11 more jobs through his trade account
