Yorkshire winters do not stop construction — and they do not have to stop your concrete pour either. But cold changes the chemistry: hydration slows dramatically below 5°C and stops around freezing. Here is how to pour safely from November to March.
Why frost is fatal to fresh concrete
Concrete gains strength through hydration — a chemical reaction between cement and water. If the free water in the mix freezes before the concrete reaches about 5 N/mm² (typically 24–48 hours), the ice expands and shatters the developing structure from within. The damage is invisible at first and permanent.
The cold-weather rulebook
- 3°C and falling = stop. 2°C and rising with protection = OK
- Never pour on frost or frozen ground — thaw settlement cracks slabs
- Pour early in the day so the mix gains strength before the overnight dip
- Cover immediately — insulated curing blankets or polythene with an air gap trap the mix’s own heat of hydration
- Do not use de-icing salt on concrete less than 12 months old

Curing in the cold

What temperature is too cold to pour concrete?+
The UK rule of thumb: do not pour below 3°C on a falling thermometer, or 2°C and rising, unless special measures are used. Concrete that freezes in its first 24–48 hours can permanently lose up to half its strength.
Can you pour concrete on frozen ground?+
No. Frozen sub-base thaws and settles later, cracking the slab, and it steals heat from the mix. Wait for a thaw or protect the ground with insulated mats beforehand.
Do accelerators help in cold weather?+
Yes — accelerating admixtures bring forward setting time and early strength, getting the concrete past the vulnerable freezing window faster. Volumetric trucks dose them at the point of pour, exactly to conditions.
How long should concrete be protected from frost?+
Keep fresh concrete above freezing for at least 48 hours — insulated blankets or a double layer of polythene with an air gap usually suffice in the UK. In hard frost, extend protection to 5–7 days.
