Case Study: Warehouse Floor Slab, Huddersfield

26 June 2026 3 min readAll guides

The job

A storage and distribution unit off Leeds Road, Huddersfield: 210m² of new internal floor slab at 150mm — 32m³ of C35 with polypropylene fibres, power-floated finish, poured in four bays over two days to suit the flooring contractor’s day-joint layout.

Why the contractor chose volumetric

  • Phased bays without waste: each bay measured 7.5–8.5m³ — drum deliveries would have meant either short loads (fees) or surplus concrete skipped at £150+ a time
  • Fibre dosing at the point of pour: fibres added per-batch in the truck’s mixing auger, evenly distributed with no plant lead time
  • Indoor placement, no time pressure: the mix does not start curing until it is made, so the pump line and crew worked at power-float pace, not drum pace

How the pour ran

  • Day 1, 7am: bays 1 & 2 — 16.1m³ through a boom pump, S4 slump for flow around the door thresholds
  • Day 2, 7am: bays 3 & 4 — 16.4m³; slump tightened to S3 for the final bay where a shallow fall to a drainage channel had to hold
  • Power-floating each bay the same afternoon; saw-cut joints the following morning

The outcome

  • 32.5m³ delivered across four bays — 0m³ wasted
  • Racking installed at 14 days after early strength checks; full 28-day cure signed off without a single crack outside the cut joints
  • Fixed, itemised invoicing per bay for the contractor’s QS

FAQs

What concrete grade is used for warehouse floors?+

C35 is the typical minimum for commercial floor slabs taking forklift traffic and racking point loads. Steel or polypropylene fibres are often added to control cracking and can replace mesh in some designs.

Can volumetric trucks handle commercial pours?+

Yes — phased bay pours actually suit volumetric delivery perfectly, because each bay gets a fresh mix with zero waste between phases, and admixture dosing can be tuned bay by bay.
