Case Study: Garden Room Bases, Halifax

26 June 2026 3 min readAll guides

The customer

A garden room installation company fitting home offices and studios across Halifax, Sowerby Bridge and the Calder Valley. Each build needs a small insulated slab — typically 1.2–1.8m³ — and their old routine was a day lost per base: collect bags, hand-mix, barrow, repeat.

The problem with small bases

  • Ready-mix plants either refused sub-2m³ loads or quoted part-load fees that doubled the cost
  • Hand-mixing 1.5m³ (around 85 bags) burned a two-man day per site and gave inconsistent strength
  • Calderdale terrain: tight terraced access and sloping gardens made barrow runs brutal

The volumetric milk round

We now run a scheduled multi-drop route with their fitting calendar:

  • One truck, one morning, up to five bases — each site gets a freshly mixed C25 at its exact measured volume
  • Slump adjusted per site — stiffer on the sloped gardens, flowing where the slab is pumped over a garage
  • Each drop invoiced separately against their trade account, so every customer’s job costs are clean

The outcome

  • Five bases poured before lunch vs one per day hand-mixing — installation capacity up ~40%
  • Certified, consistent mix strength on every slab — no more “soft corner” callbacks
  • Roughly £180 saved per base against bagged concrete, before labour

FAQs

What base does a garden room need?+

A typical insulated garden room sits on a 100–150mm C25/C30 slab over compacted hardcore, DPM and PIR insulation. A 4m × 3m room needs roughly 1.2–1.8m³ of concrete.

Can multiple small pours be done in one delivery run?+

Yes — a volumetric truck carries materials for 8–10m³ and mixes each drop separately, so several small bases in the same area can be poured back-to-back in one morning, each at its exact volume.
